A Woman at War
Revolutionary War veteran Deborah Sampson was considered an exemplar of “female heroism, fidelity and courage.” Her impoverished mother bound her out as a child to be an indentured servant to Deacon Benjamin Thomas, Middleborough farmer. She served her term with the family and grew up to serve her country as a soldier and scout. Disguised as a man, she engaged the British in battle – digging trenches and suffering injuries alongside her fellow troops. Her story has something to tell us about dedication in the face of tremendous obstacles. Special Music will be provided by a Chalice Ensemble.
