There is a poem by Rumi entitled “The Guest House” in which he compares being human with having to welcome unexpected visitors every morning – be they joys or rage or sorrows.  At first read, the philosophy seems impossible.  Age and experience allow us to tell a different story.  Special music will be provided by members of the Chalice Choir.

Veterans report having mixed feelings about this particular greeting from strangers.  Perhaps this greeting, whether casual or sincere, deserves a closer and more honest look from those of us who offer it. Special music will be provided by Nicola Wilbar.

Rev. Sarah Person preaching Rabbi Edwin Friedman used to advise clergy that, when we encountered another person in the course of our calling, we were talking with not just them, but with the generations before them.  It is also true that our bodies retain the genetic and emotional imprints, not only of our own lives, but also the lives of our forebears.  It is an important reminder for our relationships with others, and with ourselves.
