Rabbi Edwin Friedman used to advise clergy that, when we encountered another person in the course of our calling, we were talking with not just them, but with the generations before them. It is also true that our bodies retain the genetic and emotional imprints, not only of our own lives, but also the lives of our forebears. It is an important reminder for our relationships with others, and with ourselves.
