Work Sessions for our upcoming Summer Service on Domestic Violence Awareness, a victory for Native American rights, and an update on the Middleboro t-shirt case.

Work Sessions for Upcoming Summer Service on Domestic Violence Awareness

On July 16, the Social Justice Team will be presenting a Summer Service on Domestic Violence Awareness featuring a speaker who is an advocate and survivor. Following the service, we will be creating a display on the church lawn memorializing homicide victims of domestic violence in our state.

In preparation for this display, we will be having work sessions to construct figures representing the victims. The sessions will be on: Tuesday, June 27, 2:15-5:30; Wednesday June 28, starting at 7:00; and Thursday, June 29, 1:00-4:00. Please join us to help with the construction. Contributions of scrap plywood (to cut against, we’ll return it if you put your name on it) and old newspapers (to spray-paint against) would be greatly appreciated and can be left in the RE area of the parish hall.

If you have any questions, please contact any member of the Social Justice Team or send an email to: sjteam@uumiddleboro.org.

Victory for Native American Rights

In a victory for Native American rights, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act. The 1978 law aims to protect Native American adoptees and keep them with their tribe. It was challenged in Texas by non-Native American adoptive parents who said the law promoted racial discrimination. — NPR, 6/16/23

Update on Middleboro Middle School Student T-Shirt Case

In the “There are only two genders” t-shirt case [L.M. v. Town of Middleborough, et al], the court issued a ruling denying the Plaintiff’s motion for a preliminary injunction. The Plaintiff sought to have the school’s decision barring the t-shirt immediately reversed. In the ruling, the judge concluded: “All four preliminary injunction factors weigh against the relief requested, and accordingly, Plaintiff’s Motion for Preliminary Injunction is DENIED.”
