On Thursday, March 30, the Vatican repudiated the Doctrine of Discovery, the concept which European nations (and later the US) used as justification for appropriating Indigenous lands and colonizing much of the globe. It originated as a series of 15th century Papal bulls (declarations), the gist of which was that Spain and Portugal could legitimately claim and use any land not inhabited by Christians.
