Beginning September 7, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Bridgewater State University; Thursday rehearsals. Open to community members of all ages. Email Dr. Sarah McQuarrie at smcquarrie@bridgew.edu to sign up or to ask for more info about this intergenerational choir dedicated to singing music that promotes a message of peace and justice as well as performs acts of community service. No auditions. The choir includes music majors as well as folks who don’t read music and everyone in between. Four-part choral repertoire with emphasis on composers from under-represented populations.
The Bridgewater Public Library has a photo exhibit on The A-Bomb and Humanity on display throughout September. This display commemorates the anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings (1945) and all the suffering surrounding these events. On July 16, the Social Justice Team presented a summer service on Domestic Violence. The service was well attended: 44 people, 27 of whom were visitors or newcomers including several children. Our guest speaker is a survivor herself. The display of recently murdered MA women and children will be up till noon on Saturday 7/22, so come see it if you have not already. FUUSM members and others stood on our church lawn to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday and the ongoing struggle to achieve true freedom.
Work Sessions for our upcoming Summer Service on Domestic Violence Awareness, a victory for Native American rights, and an update on the Middleboro t-shirt case.
FUUSM members attended a staged reading in Bridgewater, a Pride LGBTQ+ rights festival in Taunton, and gave gave written and virtual testimony make victims of domestic violence safer.
Health Imperatives will add medication abortions to its array of reproductive and social services, in Plymouth, Wareham, Brockton, New Bedford, Hyannis and the Islands, starting July 1.
The Social Justice Committee exists to facilitate our congregation making a concrete, substantial positive difference in our community. The Committee accomplishes this charge partially by sponsoring events that directly benefit the immediate community of Middleboro and its neighboring towns: over the past year we’ve conducted a letter-writing campaign to get out the vote for the November Congressional elections; each Saturday morning we hold a “Black Lives Matter” vigil on the church’s front lawn; each month we direct Sundays’ Cash-in-the-Plate to a non-profit organization that benefits citizens of our area of Massachusetts. We also donate to national and international organizations that provide services in areas of great need, such as currently in Ukraine.
