The children have collected many marbles/glass gems for their gemstones of goodness. The children continue to share stories of their efforts to follow their moral compass. Hope, love, joy, and peace. The qualities celebrated during the Advent season are not always easy to embody. In the Christian story the figure of Jesus of Nazareth brings them to fulfillment. No wonder his birth is celebrated with such exuberance! The Advent season does not hold nearly as much meaning for non-Christians– and most Unitarian Universalists find themselves in that camp these days. After all, if you honor the historical figure of Jesus as a great teacher (“rabbi” in the Jewish tradition), prophet and healer, but not the Son of God on earth, why should his birth be a cause for celebration?
December is the month of anticipation and great collaborative music-making! Singing songs, caroling in groups, listening to others, and enjoying good cheer – our lives are marked with an abundance of hope and joy. It has been three years since we’ve been able to gather comfortably and relatively safely during the holiday season. Early in the month, a caroling choir will visit the Adult Supportive Day Program at the Middleboro COA and sing while folks decorate the huge tree in the function room. Join us for Coffee and Conversation in the Parish Hall following the Sunday Service. It’s the perfect time to catch up with friends and make new friends. Coffee Hour hosts are always welcome, and there is a labeled bin in the kitchen to receive donations of packaged goodies of cookies, etc.
Our craft fair held on Saturday, November 12, was very successful! We were open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and despite the rain and wind in the morning, we had early birds ready to buy at 9:15 AM! We had a steady amount of people during the entire fair and a LOT of people from outside the church! Barry & Patty Simon rented a table for their CDs and played music throughout the fair, which really made for a festive atmosphere – everyone seemed to really love the live music!

Here we go again, walking into darkness starting with the end of Daylight Saving Time on the first Sunday of November and marching on through to the Winter Solstice on December 21 when at last the days begin to grow longer. There are different ways to handle darkness, and one is by looking directly into it. This year the Chalice Choir is working on John Rutter’s Requiem, starting with the second movement called “Out of the Deep.” The lyrics are from Psalm 130, a plea to find solace by holding fast to the divine.
